Before you break into song

It’s hard to hear or see the phrase let it go and not want to start singing a Disney tune. Which is fitting as we have that playing in the background right now. For me though it also has a meaning in that I had to actually just decide to let it go. What is it exactly?

Probably a lot of things if I’m being honest. However, in this specific instance it is about me letting go of having to design and produce every scrap of this site myself. I just don’t have the time, energy or the practice at doing this all still.

A history lesson

You see in the past I was a printer and a design student in college. While back then I could whip out a logo design overnight. Mostly because I had to in order to complete the assignment in time. These days though I spend more time looking at logos in loading screens than designing them.

So when I set out to start redesigning my logo for Exploration Life. I thought I have the skill to come up with this and should be able to do it no problem. Give me a day and I’ll have it done. It will be so great it will rule the world!

Twelve hours later and what I had started with was this beauty from more than a few years ago.

Simple and straight forward as it is still nice and works in many ways. Horizontal, vertical, big and small. I have grown bored with it though. Know it needed life to it I was stuck and only got this far with a new one.

Not that interesting. Although in my playing I had found that I liked the Vintage look to the add-ons.

Just let go already

So by this point I knew That I was not going to get what I wanted on my own. I needed to let it go already and just admit that I had to either stick with the old one or let someone else do the hard work.

After talking it over with my wife it was clear that I had to make the decision not with my heart. Her suggestion was to make it from a position like what I wanted to be in the future. Was I wanting to be a designer? Not entirely. It isn’t and hasn’t been my joy for sometime. I enjoy photography and and other creative things much more.

I let it go and it felt great

In the end I just let the logo go from my hand. I created a quick account on Fiverr and starting the search for some with the style I knew I wanted and a good mix of logos. I didn’t want the same thing they did for everyone. You may have already seen it headlining on the front page in the reversed colors, but here is the final thing.

My new logo after I let it go on making it myself

It’s fantastic and way better than where I was heading on my own. So I do think you should consider doing the same. No CEO does everything on their own it is better to just let it go, and do something you enjoy. I managed to get photography done for My wife new art site. Which I was behind on and go to my day job while Olivia2911 was working on my logo. She did a great job and highly recommend her talents. As well as any of the folks over on Fiverr. They aren’t a sponsor I was just very glad with the results.

I will continue to try and do more of this type of thing. It should allow me to get ahead on my 21 in 20 project after getting so far behind here at the beginning of the year.
